When Galvin Green made the decision to concentrate exclusively on the game of golf in 1990, the wet-weather apparel market it entered was very different to today’s. Waterproofs were heavy and unwieldy rain suits that restricted your swing, came in just a few uninspiring colours - mostly black and navy - and didn’t always keep out the rain!Company founder Tomas Nilsson and chief designer Mats Lundqvist saw a gap in the market for a new type of waterproof clothing combining style with performance. So in 1992, they introduced garments in bold new colours - brighter blues, reds and greens - and invested in the best waterproof technology, incorporating the famous GORE-TEX® laminate (which is waterproof, but lets out sweat). Taking an unprecedented 39 pages of advertising in a single edition of Sweden’s biggest golf magazine signaled that the brand had arrived. So too did the signing of the leading Swedish player at the time, Joakim Haeggman. The first Swede to play in a European Ryder Cup team in 1993, he won the Volvo Scandinavian Masters in 1997 wearing Galvin Green clothing to propel the premium priced brand into the market. The brand then added the first 3-layer WINDSTOPPER® garment to prevent wind chill in 1996.A further advance came seven years later with the radical GORE-TEX® PACLITE® jacket that offered golfers a lighter and more packable alternative to traditional waterproofs. Pockets and an inner lining were stripped away to streamline the styling and provide a more functional, lightweight waterproof garment that minimised swing restriction and maximised performance.Another industry milestone came in 2004 with its MULTI-LAYER CONCEPT (MLC). Before MLC, golfers had limited options for wet weather apparel - usually a polo and a bulky waterproof jacket without breathability. Galvin created a new range of complementary products designed to be worn and work as a set. Starting with a range of SKINTIGHT™ Compression base layers shirts that would trap heat and increase the blood flow, golfers could add a cool, moisture-wicking shirt and a warm layer as required, often replacing uncomfortable garments that had retained moisture. Finally, a Shell layer provided an outer shield to ward off the wind and rain. As the weather conditions changed during your round, you simply added or removed suitable layers as appropriate to maintain a consistent performance level. Over the last 15 years the brand has continued to push the boundaries in golf apparel. The first half-zip waterproofs were introduced in 1998; followed by fly-zip trousers; adjustable chest tabs; rain-channeled cuffs; and stretch fabric inserts. The brand’s first GORE-TEX® waterproofs and trousers made from full stretch material came in 2008, while four-way stretch fabrics were introduced three years later. The revolutionary VENTIL8™ fabric was applied to shirts and trousers from 2010, while the company entered the US market in 2013. The brand became an Official Supplier of Weatherwear to the European Ryder Cup teams in 2016 and 2018, the later benefitting from a new Super Stretch fabric. More recently, the EDGE range targeted towards younger players, was released in 2018 with bold military and camo themes combining performance with contemporary fashion.
